National Union of Public and General Employees

This family of 14 component unions is Canada's second largest national union. Most of its 325,000 members deliver public services to the citizens of their home provinces. NUPGE advocates for progressive labour law, social programs and public services.

24.02.2005 Liberal MPs, hoping to retain their grip on power, or save their seats if an election is forced upon them, applauded giddily when Finance Minister Ralph Goodale tabled the eighth straight black ink budget, an achievement he described as "the longest unbroken string of surpluses since Confederation." The big winners are the military, corporations, seniors and Canadians with the money to sock away in Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs).

03.02.2005 A new public opinion poll conducted on behalf of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) indicates that a federally-paid national child care program is popular across the country. “Results showed that three quarters of Canadians are ready to have Ottawa pay the price for a national child care program,” says NUPGE national president James Clancy.
