MISA launches newspaper

THE Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) has launched a newspaper, the Advocate, as an additional tool to advocate for media reforms, good governance and human rights in Zambia.

MISA Zambia chapter chairperson Kellys Kaunda said yesterday that his organisation has realised that no single strategy would be sufficient to speed up media reforms and the Advocate would add a new dimension to the struggle.

Speaking during the launch at MISA House in Lusaka, Mr Kaunda said the battle for media reforms was meeting tough hurdles at every turn thereby requiring change of strategy in line with the twists and turns of the struggle.

The chairperson was hopeful that through the Advocate, MISA would be able to reach more people in the battle for reforms in the media.

"We hope through the Advocate to appeal to the people and call them to join ours and other efforts in advocating good governance in our country," he said.

Mr Kaunda appealed to the police in Northern Province to protect a Zambia Information Service (ZIS) journalist reported to be on run after writing what was perceived to be a controversial story.

He said the development was sad and a mockery after 40 years of independence and those were some of the items that the new tabloid would try to highlight and address.
