Black Namibians are under-represented in Namibian tourism, and have failed to benefit significantly from this important sector of the economy. Nacobta is a partnership between communities, government, aid organisations and the private sector. Its innovative tourism ventures create economic opportunities for poor people, and gives the traveller the chance to explore remote, underdeveloped parts of the country.

Namibia’s first integrated HIV/AIDS centre has been opened in Oshikuku in the north of the country. The centre offers Voluntary Testing and Counselling, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, and antri-retroviral treatment. The centre is operated by Catholic Health Services, in partnership with government and NGO’s.

The new Environmental Sustainability Index developed by Columbia and Yale Universities has ranked Namibia 32nd out of 164 countries. Namibia’s ranking makes it third in Africa (behind Gabon and Central African Republic), as well as the highest-rated desert country.
