Eteläisen Afrikan kehitysyhteisön kokouksessa 14 afrikkalaisen maan johtajat ilmoittivat poistavansa lähestulkoon kaikki tullit maiden keskinäisestä kaupasta seuraavan kahden vuoden aikana. 10.08.2006 Kuudessa kehitysmaassa tehty tutkimus osoittaa mediassa lieviä väsymisen merkkejä hiv/aids-aiheisia uutisia kohtaan. Etelä-Afrikassa kymmenen prosenttia haastatelluista toimittajista piti aiheen uutisarvoa alhaisena. Etelä-Afrikan kansalaisjärjestöt ovat tyytyväisiä hiv/aidsin saamaan painoarvoon mediassa, mutta tyytymättömiä yksipuoliseen kirjoitteluun aiheesta.
