Osa valkoisista maanviljelijöistä uskoo hyökkäysten takana olevan rotuvihaa, mutta hallituksen mukaan tilastot eivät vahvista tätä. Maatalouden osuus bruttokansantulosta on laskenut. Valkoiset maanviljelijät syyttävät tästä rikollisuuden tuomaa turvattomuutta. Maan hallituksen tavoitteena on siirtää liki kolmannes viljelymaasta mustien viljelijöiden omistukseen vuoteen 2014 mennessä.
