Sudanin hallitus on viime viikkoina vahvistanut joukkojaan konfliktin runtelemassa Darfurin maakunnassa. Asetelma saattaa johtaa vakavaan ihmisoikeuskatastrofiin aivan lähitulevaisuudessa, ihmisoikeusjärjestö Amnesty International varoittaa.

Darfurin turvallisuustilanne on entistä epävakaampi, raportoi konfliktinratkaisuun keskittyvä IRC-organisaatio. Alueen suurimman pakolaisleirin ympärillä on seksuaalisen väkivallan kohteeksi joutunut yli kaksisataa naista vain viimeisen viiden viikon aikana. Alueella partioiville Afrikan unionin joukoille tulisi välittömästi antaa keinot siviiliväestön puolustamiseen, painottaa ICR.

A massive increase in sexual assaults near Darfur's largest displacement camp could be halted if African Union forces patrolling the area were immediately given the resources they need to protect civilians, says an international advocacy group.

850 famiglie - per un totale di 15 villaggi distrutti - hanno perso le loro case insieme a ogni proprietà a causa dell'inizio del riempimento del bacino di raccolta della diga di Merowe, avvenuto senza alcun preavviso. Altri 10 villaggi rischiano di essere le prossime vittime e l'incaricata speciale dell'ONU per i Diritti Umani, Sima Samar, in visita a Khartoum, ha espresso la sua preoccupazione. L'Associazione per i Popoli Minacciati chiede il risarcimento per le vittime alla ditta tedesca Lahmeyer International.

Sudanese officials have been sparring verbally with humanitarian groups supporting UN and AU reports of increased violence in Darfur despite thesigning of a peace agreement in early May.

The May Darfur Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and several rebel groups has brought anything but peace. July was the deadliest month of violence for the region since the conflict began.
