medici in Africa - da msf.it

Darfurin pakolainen

Soldati dell'UA in Darfur

13.02.2006 The odds are stacked against women in Darfur for bringing rape charges, which are often reduced to assault or require a male witness. But hopes are high that the International Criminal Court will be able to change the situation. Christine Butegwa from Femnet reports.

09.02.2006 WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb 9 (OneWorld) - United Nations experts are urging Sudan's neighbors to stop arms smuggling into the war-wrecked country. The move comes as advocates press the U.S. government to use its leadership of the UN Security Council to calm the killing fields of Darfur.

The panel also recommended that the Security Council strengthen and extend the arms embargo.
09.02.2006 A U.N. panel of sanction experts has urged the authorities in neighboring countries to crack down on unofficial arms shipments to Sudan. Weapons continue to spill into the troubled Darfur region of Western Sudan in direct violation of an arms embargo in place since 2004, and the panel reports that rebel groups are also receiving financial and political support from neighbors.

The statement, which was unanimously adopted by the U.S. led Security Council, does not provide a new protection mandate for the African Union mission or commit the U.N. to forceful intervention, says Africa Action.
07.02.2006 Recent activism has forced the U.S. to address the genocide in Darfur, but the newly adopted U.N. statement falls short of a resolution, says Africa Action. The statement, a non-binding contingency plan, does not commit the U.N. to concrete action to stop the violence. Join Africa Action in letting the Bush Administration know that the U.S. must introduce a bold mandate this month!

01.02.2006 In a speech that stressed the need for the U.S. to engage with the world, to reject "isolationism," and to confront "tyranny" and "evil," President Bush failed to mention--for the second year running--the ongoing genocide in Darfur or any action his administration might take to help stop it, said Africa Action Wednesday.
