21.07.2006 The international community has spent over $400 million to help the Congolese elect a democratic parliament next week, but without continued support the newly formed body will be ineffectual in its role of fighting corruption and stabilizing the country, the International Crisis Group said Friday.

Heinäkuun lopulla pidettävien vaalien toivotaan vakiinnuttavan Kongon tilannetta ja antavan mahdollisuuden jälleenrakennukseen ja yhteiskunnallisiin uudistuksiin.

13.07.2006 Il Governo Prodi sostiene la missione elettorale di 63 volontari italiani che a fine mese saranno nell'est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo in qualità di osservatori della società civile italiana alle prime elezioni democratiche e multipartitiche, dopo più di quarant'anni, tappa di prima importanza sulla strada di una pace duratura in un paese nel quale le guerre dal '98 hanno causato quattro milioni di morti. Lo ha annunciato ieri a Milano nel corso di una conferenza stampa a Palazzo Isimbardi don Albino Bizzotto, presidente di Beati i Costruttori di Pace, l'associazione che assieme a Chiama l'Africa e su invito della società civile congolese ha organizzato la missione. Quest'ultima ha lo scopo di favorire, in particolare nell'est del paese dove sono ancora presenti gruppi ribelli, lo svolgimento regolare delle elezioni (primo turno delle presidenziali e legislative), che si terranno il 30 luglio.

È dal 1960, anno dell'indipendenza, che la Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RDC) attende le sue prime elezioni libere e democratiche. La data è fissata per il prossimo 30 luglio. «Siamo testimoni dell'impazienza della popolazione, che vuole farla finita con la situazione politica drammatica che ha portato miserie indescrivibili, sofferenze indicibili e innumerevoli morti» - affermano i membri del Comitato Permanente della Conferenza Episcopale della RDC (CENCO) al termine della loro sessione straordinaria tenutasi dal 21 al 24 giugno. «Siamo testimoni della volontà del popolo di arrivare, al più presto, all'instaurazione di uno Stato di diritto. Il nostro popolo non merita questo pesante fardello di incertezza del domani, di crescente insicurezza e di miseria intollerabile».
