Nella stessa tornata si eleggono i membri delle assemblee provinciali.

Syynä häätöön on etnisten ryhmien välien kiristyminen luonnonvaroja koskevien kiistojen vuoksi. 16.10.2006 Una nuova ricerca condotta dalla campagna Control Arms ha rivelato che proiettili prodotti in Grecia, Cina, Russia e Usa sono stati trovati nelle mani dei gruppi ribelli che agiscono nella regione orientale della Repubblica democratica del Congo (Rdc), che si trova sotto un embargo dell’Onu. "Il fatto che, probabilmente per la prima volta, proiettili prodotti in Grecia e Usa vengono trovati nella Rdc orientale, è la prova del crescente flusso globale di armi che sta alimentando i combattimenti nella regione" commenta la campagna Control Arms, la cui ricerca condotta nel settembre di quest’anno, ha consentito di rinvenire, a tre anni di distanza dall’imposizione dell’embargo dell’Onu, una serie di armi e munizioni prodotte anche in Russia, Cina, Serbia e Sudafrica. Secondo i tre promotori della campagna Control Arms "questo scandalo sottolinea ancora una volta la necessità di un Trattato internazionale sul commercio di armi, in grado di fermare il flusso di armi nelle zone di conflitto". Tra una settimana, l’Onu dovrebbe mettere ai voti una risoluzione per avviare i lavori sul Trattato.
