Mainstreet Technologies threw its hat in the ring this week to be the first to complete an African west coast fibre project to compete with SAT3. The cable will connect 12 countries, some already connected to SAT3, others not. Russell Southwood spoke to the project’s CEO Funke Opeke and discovered how it intends to win the race to complete.

Floods across Africa are reported to be the worst in decades in some places and extend in an arc from Mauritania in the west to Kenya in the east. At least an estimated 1.5 million people are so far affected.

Zimbabwen ammatillinen keskusjärjestö on ilmoittanut järjestävänsä toisen valtakunnallisen työnseisauksen syyskuun 19.-20. päivinä. Edellinen työnseisaus pidettiin huhtikuussa, minkä jälkeen inflaatio on kivunnut lähes 8000 prosenttiin. Hallitus on ilmoittanut, ettei se aio "vain istua ja katsoa, kun ammattiliitto rampauttaa Zimbabwen lakkoilullaan".

Un impegno per il cessate il fuoco unilaterale nel Darfur fin dall'inizio dei negoziati al quale il presidente del Sudan ha risposto annunciando la "disponibilità del suo governo" chiedendo però che "coinvolga anche i ribelli che finora non hanno accettato le trattative". E' quanto emerge dalla conferenza stampa al termine del colloqui tra il Presidente del Consiglio, Romano Prodi, e il presidente sudanese, Omar El Bashir. Un incontro al centro dell'attenzione internazionale anche per le critiche sollevate da diverse parti al governo italiano per essere il primo di un paese occidentale ad ospitare il dittatore sudanese considerato responsabile delle violenze nel Darfur attraverso il sostegno alle milizie Janjaweed. Per domenica 16 settembre la "Save Darfur Coalition" ha indetto la "Giornata per il Darfur" con manifestazioni e azioni a favore della regione sudanese dove le violenze nell’arco di quattro anni hanno provocato non meno di 200mila morti e due milioni e mezzo di sfollati.
