Two years after Taco Bell agreed to raise the price it pays for tomatoes picked by some of the poorest paid workers in the United States, its parent company has reached a similar agreement, bringing several other fast food chains along with it.

NEW YORK, May 31 (OneWorld) - U.S. President George W. Bush signed into law Congress' plan for continued war funding last Friday -- and with it, an attached proposal to raise the federal minimum wage from its current level of $5.15 to $7.25 per hour in 2009.

Chagos Island families this morning secured another legal victory over the British government in their long-running struggle to be allowed to return to the Indian Ocean home from which they were evicted 40 years ago to make way for a US nuclear base. The government will almost certainly appeal, since consecutive British administrations, acting in lockstep with Washington, have shown their determination not to give an inch, whatever the courts say.
