Turkin hyökkäykset Irakin puolelle kurdiseparatistien PKK:n asemiin ovat jatkoa vuosikausia kestäneelle konfliktille, jossa on kuollut jo 40 000 ihmistä. Turkin armeijan hyökkäys on heikentänyt PKK:ta, mutta historia osoittaa, että sotilaallinen voima ei tuo konfliktiin loppua.

Alla vigilia della visita del premier turco Erdogan in Italia, la Rete Italiana Disarmo chiede al Governo italiano di "sospendere le forniture militari alla Turchia" in seguito alle operazioni belliche contro i separatisti nella Turchia orientale, un conflitto che si sta estendendo al Kurdistan iracheno. La Turchia è uno tra i principali clienti dell'industria militare italiana e lo scorso settembre è stata autorizzata la fornitura di 51 elicotteri militari A129 (i Mangusta) della AgustaWestland per un valore stimato di circa 1,2 miliardi di euro, nonostante proprio a causa della sua politica inadeguata nel rispetto dei diritti umani proceda a rilento il processo di adesione all'Unione Europea e Ankara sia stata ripetutamente richiamata al rispetto dei diritti umani da diverse risoluzioni del Parlamento Europeo.

Un rapporto diffuso oggi da Amnesty International denuncia che "la tortura, i maltrattamenti e le uccisioni in Turchia continuano a essere segnate da una persistente impunità per le forze di sicurezza". "Le indagini e i procedimenti giudiziari su casi di gravi violazioni dei diritti umani compiute dalla polizia e dalla gendarmeria sono lacunose e viziate da decisioni contraddittorie da parte dei magistrati" - riporta Amnesty. Il rapporto denuncia anche "uccisioni da parte delle forze di sicurezza in circostanze in cui esse non erano coinvolte in scontri armati". Nel marzo 2006, a Diyarbakir, nella Turchia orientale, una serie di manifestazioni contro il governo terminò con un’ondata di arresti: un terzo degli arrestati, bambini inclusi, furono sottoposti a maltrattamenti e torture, ma a distanza di oltre un anno non vi è stata alcuna incriminazione nei confronti delle forze di sicurezza.

Life in the village of Golovasi used to revolve around the fishing in the nearby Mediterranean Sea, but the arrival of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline has kept fishermen out of their fishing regions and driven the fish out of the area. "Fishing here is finished," said a local fisherman. "We have boats, but we don't really use them anymore."
