DUSHANBE, Nov 15 (IPS) - Women have played important roles in rebuilding Tajikistan after the country's civil war of the 1990s. But women in this central Asian country still have many obstacles to overcome to reach equality with men, according to some local activists and international observers.

Five Central Asian states committed themselves to never acquiring, manufacturing, possessing, or testing nuclear weapons by signing a treaty Thursday to create a Central Asian nuclear-weapon-free zone.

A Tajikistan agency is de-mining the Afghan-Tajik border which is one of the highest mine-risk areas in central Asia. The Tajik de-mining body hopes to clear mines in a 2,000 sq metres area within three weeks.

Punaisen Ristin ruoka-apua jaettiin Tadzhikistanissa viime vuoden marras-joulukuussa yli 32 000 ihmiselle ja tämän vuoden helmikuussa yli 17 000 ihmiselle.

A US $420,000 programme is to be launched in Tajikistan to support vocational training throughout the country, particularly for vulnerable groups. The project, which has UNDP support, will in the initial phase, offer vocational training to demobilised combatants in the capital, Dushanbe.

More than 64,710 students and teachers in Tajikistan's mountainous Badakshon region will benefit from a school feeding programme of the World Food Programme. The initiative is likely to boost enrolments and attendance in schools in the drought affected country.

School feeding projects in Tajikistan have helped increase the overall student attendance rates from 66 percent to 93 percent in the last 18 months. Tajikistan had inherited a good education system from the Soviet era, but it crumbled with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the devastating civil war.

The World Bank has approved US $20 million for an "Education Modernisation Project" to be carried out in Tajikistan in collaboration with the country's Ministry of Education. Education standards have been declining in the past 10 years.
