The Sudanese government agreed Tuesday to accept a robust UN-African Union force to ensure protection for the people of Darfur. As many as 19,000 peacekeepers may be deployed shortly.

YK:n lastenrahasto on ilahtunut tiedoista, että sudanilainen entinen kapinallisryhmä vapauttaa palveluksessaan olleita lapsisotilaita. Eilinen ilmoitus lasten luovuttamisesta on kuukausien neuvottelujen tulos UNICEF:in ja vapautusarmeijan välillä. Sopimus velvoittaa Sudanin vapautusarmeijan paljastamaan lasten sijainnin joukoissaan ja luovuttamaan heidät.

Southern Sudanese military and official sources say the threat from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels has eased in eastern Equatoria, but widespread fear remains, whole villages are abandoned and a key road from Uganda to the Southern Sudan capital Juba is still patrolled by Sudanese and Ugandan troops.
