Vaikka tulitauot Darfurissa ovat epäonnistuneet kerta toisensa jälkeen, Refugees International -järjestö suhtautuu toiveikkaasti uusimpaan yritykseen saavuttaa rauha alueella. Järjestö toivoo, että Sudanin presidentin henkilökohtainen osallistuminen neuvotteluihin lisää sekä hallituksen että kapinallisten paineita pyrkiä kohti rauhaa.

Although ceasefires have failed time and again in the region, Refugees International has hailed the latest move toward peace, hoping that the personal involvement of Sudan's president in the talks would add pressure to both the government and rebel groups to comply.

While all sides claim they are still committed to the peace process, Ugandan rebels have demanded talks be moved from South Sudan to a "neutral" country like Kenya or South Africa. Sudanese leaders say comments that sparked the rebel outcry were taken out of context.

Rauhantoiveet Sudanin Darfurin alueella ovat hiipuneet väkivallan leimahduksiin. Se on ajanut avustusjärjestöt laajimpiin väkensä evakuointeihin sitten toiminnan alkamisen vuonna 2004. Darfurissa on ollut meneillään maailman suurin avustusoperaatio. Se pyrkii auttamaan liki neljää miljoonaa ihmistä, joista 2,5 miljoonaa on joutunut jättämään kotinsa.

Yhdysvaltalaiset järjestöt painostavat hallitustaan pakottamaan Sudanin ruotuun, mutta tulosta ei näytä syntyvän. Darfurin lukkiutunut tilanne on nostattanut Yhdysvalloissa ennennäkemättömän aktivismiaallon. Darfur-toimintaa koordinoi Save Darfur -koalitio, joka sanoo edustavansa peräti 130 miljoonaa ihmistä 175 järjestöstä.

Plan aikoo jatkaa tärkeää työtään Darfurissa, Länsi-Sudanissa tukeakseen perheitä, jotka ovat taistelujen vuoksi joutuneet jättämään kotinsa. Humanitaarinen tilanne alueella on edelleen vaikea. Humanitaarisista kriiseistä tiedottava AlertNet on nimennyt Sudanin maailman vaarallisimmaksi paikaksi lapsille asua.

Yhdysvaltalainen Africa Action -ryhmä pitää tervetulleena YK:n pääsihteerin Ban Ki-moonin sitoumusta paneutua Darfurin kriisiin entistä paremmin. Kiitosta saavat myös Yhdysvaltojen uudet diplomaattiset avaukset asiassa. Ryhmä kuitenkin tuomitsee sen, ettei rauhanturvaajien saamisessa alueelle ole edistytty. Kuolonurhit ja pakolaiseksi lähteminen ovat alueella arkipäivää.

A leading Africa lobbying group welcomed the commitment of new UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to prioritizing Darfur and noted new U.S. diplomatic overtures, but condemned the lack of progress toward implementing a UN peacekeeping force as civilians continue to face death and displacement.

Five killed in bomb attack on civilians in Darfur

Five people have been killed in a bombing raid on civilians in the western Sudanese Darfur region, according to the African Union mission in Sudan. Attacks on villages near Kutum in North Darfur, was carried out by a government Antonov plane, according to the AU force commander, Luke Aprezi. The raid came two days after the AU mission and the United Nations mission held meetings with rebel commanders in the area.
