30.09.2005 As the Interim Legislative Council of southern Sudan, which brings together many former military and political adversaries, was officially inaugurated in Juba, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese were trekking home in a previously unreported migration of displaced people.

28.09.2005 The Janjaweed, a militia group allegedly allied to the Sudanese government, must be disarmed if peace is to return to the country's Darfur region, the U.N.'s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide said Monday.

23.09.2005 Before his death in August, Sudan's first Vice President John Garang issued an ultimatum that come November, Northern Uganda's rebels operating out of southern Sudan would face military action if they failed to disband. With Garang out of the picture, the rebels continue to be active, killing 17 in one recent attack.

21.09.2005 In a further escalation of the conflict in western Sudan, rebels of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army have seized the previously government-controlled town of Shareya, northeast of Nyala, capital of South Darfur State, aid workers reported.

20.09.2005 A nutritional assessment conducted by Action Against Hunger in southern Sudan has found malnutrition "at or above the rates currently observed in Niger." The group is imploring the international community to focus resources on the nutritional crisis, which it says is being overlooked amidst the improving political situation.
