The U.S. should urge the U.N. to provide a stronger mandate and larger force to protect the vulnerable in Darfur, Sudan, said Africa Action Monday. The U.S. is in a strong position to initiate an intervention and Americans want it, the group said, citing the thousands of postcards U.S. citizens have sent to the White House calling for action.

The Bush administration has so far failed to provide adequate diplomatic and military support to stop the killing in Darfur, says a new report released Wednesday by Refugees International, echoing calls from lawmakers and other Africa advocates for a stronger international force in the embattled Sudanese region.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 10 (OneWorld) - Alarmed by the recent upsurge in violence in Sudan's strife-torn Darfur region, international human rights groups are demanding the United Nations and United States take immediate actions for the protection of civilians.
