This is the most serious humanitarian emergency in the world today," Hilary Benn told MPs on 9 June. Yet the crisis in Darfur is happening because the Government of Sudan wants it to happen, and the rest of the world does not care enough to stop it, writes IDS research fellow Stephen Devereux. (See Sudan emergency appeal.)

Sudaniin ei saada vakiinnutettua rauhaa, elleivät kansan syvät rivit koe asiaa omakseen, maan uskontokunnat katsovat. Siksi ne aikovat kääntää rauhansopimuksen ydinkohdat lukuisille Sudanissa puhutuille kielille. Maassa kuitenkin epäillään yhä, ovatko hallitus ja sissit sittenkään tosissaan valmiita rauhaan annetuilla ehdoilla. Samalla Darfurin alueella jatkuu kansanmurhaksi luonnehdittu etninen konflikti.

The United Nations Security Council, the body supremely charged with acting to ensure international peace and security, is failing in its responsibility to Darfur's victims of ethnic cleansing. The UN's own evidence of government complicity in attacks is now so great that further investigation must now be replaced by real and unequivocal condemnation at the highest level, states Minority Rights Group International (MRG).

Suomen Punainen Risti on välittänyt jo miljoona euroa Sudaniin tänä keväänä. Noin miljoona ihmistä on joutunut lähtemään kodeistaan Darfurin taistelujen vuoksi. Heistä 110 000 on paennut rajan yli Tshadiin, ja loput elävät Darfurissa leireissä, muissa tilapäismajoituksissa ja taivasalla.
