16.07.2003 The army took control the tiny West African island nation of Sao Tomé and Príncipe early this morning in a mostly bloodless coup, taking advantage of the President's visit to Nigeria and declaring a "junta of national salvation." The country--one of the poorest in the world--is expecting a windfall from offshore oilfields due to begin production within four years, and has recently drawn interest from Nigeria and the United States, both militarily and economically.

In general, it is African countries, and the smallest, poorest and most debt-ridden countries that are being subjected to IMF conditions on water privatization and full cost recovery.
