08.07.2004 Project backers have failed to make an economic case for the Nam Theun 2 energy export scheme in Laos, says a new report by Toronto-based Probe International. The US$1.1-billion dam project would require large-scale flooding and resettlement of thousands of poor farmers - and would be more costly and less reliable than other generating options to serve neighbouring Thailand.

19.05.2004 VCD modules that promote learning and reflection have been developed for migrant girls crossing the Mekong River into Thailand, as well as other groups of at-risk youth. This pilot, developed under a project of the US-based Education Development Center, seeks to demonstrate how VCD

29.01.2004 La Banca europea per gli investimenti (BEI) ha approvato nel tardo pomeriggio di ieri un finanziamento di 60 milioni di euro per il contestato progetto della miniera di rame di Sepon, in Laos, di proprietà della compagnia australiana Oxiana. La notizia è stata accolta con estremo sfavore da parte delle Ong internazionali, tra cui la Campagna per la riforma della Banca mondiale, che nel dicembre scorso erano riuscite a far rinviare la decisione e che oggi denunciano la mancanza di una valutazione di impatto ambientale.
