Yet Goa’s recent anti-SEZ campaign was led by educated professionals, activists, the church and media, forcing the state government to backtrack. The SEZ is an independent foreign territory with no local or government control, say Goa’s champion campaigners.

To boost its corporate social responsibility work, GAIL India Ltd has launched an e-Shiksha programme for rural children at some of its plants in north and central India. Started with an investment of INR 6.3 million, the mobile centres will have buses equipped with laptops to teach children computer basics in local languages.

Six years after the genocidal violence against Muslims in Gujarat in western India, victim survivors want to set up a ‘Gulberg Museum of resistance’ that will preserve memories, documents and films on the state-sponsored carnage. On February 28, 2002, the Gulberg Society in the heart of Ahmedabad city witnessed the massacre of 70 persons.

In a step taken to protect rights of sexual minorities, the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India has announced the establishment of a welfare board for transgenders. The move followed a public hearing by NGOs on the plight of the community and recommendations by a citizens’ jury.

An unusual corporate environmental programme by a global bank draws over a hundred bird enthusiasts each year in India. The annual bird races promote awareness of natural habitats and help collect data. The last race at Bangalore spotted 277 bird species – a quarter of all birds found on the Indian subcontinent.

Smoking kills nearly a million people a year in India. A new study reveals that tuberculosis rather than cancer is the common cause of death among Indians who smoke. The study also says that only 2% of smokers quit – and that too because they are too sick to continue.
