24.08.2006 DHAKA, Aug 23 (Reuters): Bangladesh on Wednesday sought international assistance, including from the United States, to help find a new home for thousands of refugees from Myanmar, saying it couldn't afford to keep them any longer. Some 21,000 Rohingya Muslims from mainly Buddhist Myanmar have been living in two camps in Cox's Bazar district, 450 km (280 miles) southeast of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka for more than a decade.

17.08.2006 Hiv/aidsiin sairastuneita sekä hiv-kampanjaan osallistuneita pidätettiin viime sunnuntaina Burmassa. Maan sotilashallitus osoitti jo vuosi sitten piittaamattomuutensa hiv-työtä kohtaan, määrättyään hiv-positiivisten hoitokodin suljettavaksi. YK epäilee maan hallituksen olevan kyvytön vastaamaan hiv-ongelmaan. Burmassa arvioidaan olevan satoja tuhansia hiv/aidsia sairastavia.

02.08.2006 Kansainvälinen työjärjestö ILO on osoittanut Burman hallinnon viivyttelevän pakkotyön lopettamista. Pakkotyö on Burmassa laitonta, mutta sitä käytetään erityisesti armeijaa hyödyntävissä aputehtävissä. Ellei Burman johto ole edistynyt pakkotyön lopettamisessa tulevaan marraskuuhun mennessä, ILO voi viedä asian Haagin kansainvälinen oikeuden käsittelyyn.
