Even while 3,000 and more people were killed by the deadly storm, local volunteers shouting warnings about the impending cyclone on loudspeakers saved thousands of lives in Bangladesh. This simple, inexpensive and effective warning model is now inspiring policymakers in developing countries.

The fatal cyclone of November 15 has seriously affected seven out of the nine working districts of the Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC), while completely destroying one of its Rural Knowledge Centres.

The World Bank has announced $250 million in aid for the recovery and rehabilitation of millions of Bangladeshis affected by Cyclone Sidr. Part of the funds will also be used to strengthen the country’s disaster mitigation systems.

Aid agencies have put the total death count at over 5,000 – more than half being children – four days after Cyclone Sidr wrecked Bangladesh’s southern coast. An estimated 400,000 children under the age of five have been affected by the fatal storm in Bangladesh, with many drowning or being injured by falling trees.

In Bangladesh sono più di 3 mila i morti accertati a causa del ciclone Sidr, ma il bilancio si attesterà tra i 5mila e i 10mila, riporta la Mezzaluna Rossa. Il timore è che le migliaia di corpi in decomposizione avvelenino l'acqua spalancando le porte alle epidemie. I soccorritori non sono ancora riusciti a raggiungere le zone maggiormente colpite dal maggior tifone che abbia colpito il paese negli ultimi dieci anni. Numerose le agenzie internazionali e italiane impegnate nei soccorsi: l'Unicef sta intensificando l'invio di aiuti d'emergenza così come Medici senza Frontiere. La Caritas è subito intervenuta salvando molte persone grazie ai rifugi anticiclone, strutture normalmente utilizzate come scuole, costruite negli anni anche con il sostegno di Caritas Italiana.

Hal itu terbukti dengan diizinkannya pembangunan 6 (enam) jalan tol dalam kota Jakarta. Padahal, pembanguan jalan tol terbukti justru merangsang penggunaan mobil pribadi yang akhirnya menambah kemacetan dan polusi udara

The UN and World Food Programme (WFP) have warned of humanitarian crises in central-west, central and northeastern Afghanistan if food does not reach people before winter. About 400,000 people are in urgent need of food aid before heavy snow blocks up the mountainous regions.
