PAHELI (People’s Audit of Health, Education and Livelihoods) takes MDGs to the local level so that ordinary residents can understand how far they have fared on their social goals. This exercise has been carried out by the NGO Pratham with support from UNDP and UNICEF in 11 of the poorest districts in India.

A recent report on Afghanistan reveals that social and economic progress is still a distant dream for its people as they struggle amidst military conflict. Over six million Afghans remain hungry while 60,000 children are addicted to drugs, the Human Development Report 2007 claimed.

Global warming could impact one billion people, warned Rajendra K. Pachauri of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the opening of the largest-ever gathering of world leaders on climate change. Heads of states, top officials, civil society and business leaders from over 150 nations attended the high-level meeting on 24 September.

WaterAid and its partners are using novel ways to educate people on sanitation. The community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approach has already had a huge impact in Bangladesh where open defecation is a common problem.

The latest 5th edition of the Key Indicators of the Labour Market (KILM) report, published every other year by the International Labour Organization, makes available labour market information, analysis and key elements. A set of 20 labour market indicators covers the various features of decent work deficits worldwide, keeping in mind the changing labour market conditions.

Nel momento in cui il Senato affronta la discussione sulla riforma della legge sulla cooperazione allo sviluppo, la rete europea "Azione per la salute globale", di cui AIDOS e CESTAS sono i referenti italiani, ha presentato oggi a Roma "Allarme salute", il dossier sulla salute nei paesi più poveri. "Malgrado gli impegni politici assunti a livello mondiale nel settore sanitario, la cooperazione italiana, come anche quella europea e internazionale, resta molto distante dagli obiettivi dichiarati: non solo i finanziamenti stanziati sono insufficienti, ma lo scarso coordinamento e la mancanza di continuità riducono notevolmente l'efficacia degli interventi" - affermano le associazioni. Tra gli errori da evitare, "i grandi ospedali che tanto attraggono e commuovono i donatori privati, ma che poco cambiano nelle condizioni delle popolazioni più povere".

Nel mondo un adulto su cinque è ancora oggi analfabeta e nei due terzi dei casi si tratta di donne: sono infatti circa 774 milioni gli adulti che non possiedono le nozioni minime di scrittura e lettura. E' soprattutto negli Stati Arabi che l'analfabetismo raggiunge punte massime: ben il 44%, una percentuale che supera anche quella dell'Africa subsahariana (39%). E più di 72 milioni di bambini non sono scolarizzati mentre un numero ancora maggiore frequenta la scuola irregolarmente o l'abbandona. Sono i dati forniti dall'Unesco in occasione della Giornata mondiale dell'alfabetizzazione 2007. "E' il momento giusto per prendere in esame la sfida mondiale dell'alfabetizzazione - scrive nel suo messaggio il Direttore generale dell'Unesco Koïchiro Matsuura. Le associazioni, tra cui Amref e Vis, in sintonia col tema della giornata, pongono l'accento sulla relazione tra alfabetismo e salute rinnovando il loro impegno nel settore.
