Women are most affected ones by extreme poverty
31.07.2007 The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have reached a halfway point but little seems to have changed, particularly for women whose lives are most affected by extreme poverty. The MDGs do not deal with the underlying causes for women and girl's poverty which needs to be understood in ways men and women access and control services and resources.

31.07.2007 Indian state Gujarat, which lies on the west coast, is celebrating a successful school enrollment drive that started five years ago to ensure all children, especially girls, are enrolled in schools. Through community mobilisation in 18,000 Gujarat villages the initiative has met with sizeable success.

25.07.2007 Indian civil society The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation (NJKF) is inviting applications for the Indian Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 Award. The Award seeks to recognize social entrepreneurs who are pragmatic visionaries and the winner will be announced in December at a ceremony coinciding with the India Economic Summit.

17.07.2007 A report on the realization of MDGs in the state of Orissa was released on the halfway date, 07.07.07, at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. The document has been compiled by the ‘Katha Rakhibaa Sarakar’ (KRS) Campaign and takes stock of the achievements in the first half of the MDG deadline while also setting an agenda for the remaining time.

16.07.2007 "Le persone con disabilità rimangono largamente escluse dagli Obiettivi del Millennio": lo afferma una nota dell'Aifo che insieme alle Ong e alle Organizzazioni di Persone con Disabilità che si dedicano alla cooperazione allo sviluppo chiede che "i donatori internazionali e gli stati membri dell'Onu usino questa fase di metà percorso verso la data del 2015 fissata per il raggiungimento degli Obiettivi del Millennio, per ri-focalizzare l'attenzione, monitorare e prendere attivamente in considerazione le necessità della fascia più povera della società, quella delle persone con disabilità". Ci sono 650 milioni di persone con disabilità nel mondo e l'80% di esse vive nei paesi in via di sviluppo: la gran parte delle persone con disabilità in questi paesi vive al di sotto della linea di povertà, ma gli investimenti nei servizi di base come la sanità e l'educazione sono insufficienti e si riducono - sottolinea la nota.

Nella data simbolica del 07.07.07 (7 luglio 2007) vi saranno eventi e concerti di sensibilizzazione collegati all’iniziativa “Live Earth”. La Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) promuove eventi in 65 città del mondo sottolineando come i mutamenti climatici stiano provocando danni ingenti alle popolazioni del Sud del mondo. La rete Oneworld, di cui Unimondo è il partner italiano, sostiene l’appello e invita a partecipare all’iniziativa promossa dal sito www.oneclimate.net. In Italia, la Tavola della pace si riunisce ad Assisi per mettere a punto l’organizzazione della prossima Marcia e della Settimana della pace in programma dal 1 al 7 ottobre.

Eradicate poverty and inequality.
06.07.2007 Anti-poverty campaigners around the world are organising a broad range of events around July 7th to mark the midway point for the UN Millennium Development Goals and to hold their governments to account. Part of the growing Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), the July 07, 2007 events will focus on how governments’ efforts to meet these goals are insufficient and to highlight the growing threat of climate change on the poor and marginalised.
