The High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, locked Developing Countries and the Small Island Developing States, Anwarul K. Chowdhury, who is stepping down, urged the world media to step up its attention on the needs of "voiceless" developing countries when dealing with cyclones, floods, prolonged droughts and other environmental effects of climate change.

The mid-point to the 2015 deadline, 07.07.07, for meeting the Millennium Development Goals is just around the corner. NGOs worldwide are gearing up to press governments for faster action. In India, the UN Millennium Campaign and other civil society organizations are pushing the ruling UPA government to meet the MDG targets.

GENEVA, Jun 28 (IPS) - Global civil society leaders called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Thursday to use both international channels and their muscle on the ground for applying pressure on governments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

"Gli italiani chiedono con determinazione che nel prossimo DPEF si rispettino gli impegni presi dall'Italia per raggiungere lo 0,7% del Pil in Aiuto Pubblico allo Sviluppo". Lo affermano, in base a un'indagine commissionata alla Doxa, la Focsiv e la Campagna per gli Obiettivi del Millennio. La Focsiv ha inviato nei giorni scorsi una lettera al Presidente del Consiglio, Romano Prodi, per chiedere che nel documento di programmazione economica (Dpef) di fine giugno "ci sia un inversione di rotta rispetto alla destinazione delle risorse pubbliche in favore alla lotta alla povertà nel mondo". La Campagna del Millennio, durante una conferenza a Roma in cui è intervenito Kofi Annan, ha chiesto al Governo di rispettare gli impegni presi in sede internazionale per il raggiungimento degli Obiettivi del Millennio per sconfiggere la povertà estrema. Anche la Viceministro per la cooperazione, Patrizia Sentinelli, ha chiesto al Governo di aumentare di circa il 50% Aiuto Pubblico allo Sviluppo che l'Italia devolve.

The Indian government’s cash initiatives are sweeping a healthy competition across the country, says Jaipur-based activist Kalyan Singh Kothari. The Nirmal Gram Puruskars are part of the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) that hopes to achieve full sanitation coverage in India by 2012.

In occasione della Conferenza Internazionale del Mid Term che vedrà riuniti a Roma i Sindaci del Nord e del Sud del Mondo, la Campagna del Millennio delle Nazioni Unite si terrà oggi a Roma l'incontro con Kofi Annan (già Segretario delle Nazioni Unite), Eveline Herfkens (Coordinatrice esecutiva della Campagna del Millennio dell’Onu) e Walter Veltroni (Sindaco di Roma) con i rappresentanti delle organizzazioni della società civile e gli organi di informazione italiana e internazionale. L’incontro servirà a fare un punto sugli Obiettivi del Millennio e l’impegno dell’Italia per il loro raggiungimento e sarà anche l’occasione per inaugurare la Mostra del Millennio “Dammi un…zero, sette!!!” allestita in questi giorni a a Roma.

In base al trend degli ultimi anni che registra l’iscrizione a scuola di circa 4,2 milioni di bambini in più ogni anno, il secondo Obiettivo del Millennio non verrà raggiunto entro il 2015. Se la media annuale non subirà un forte incremento, per quell’anno saranno ancora 30 milioni i bambini che non avranno un’educazione di base. E’ quanto emerge da un nuovo dossier di Save the Children, secondo cui il progresso complessivo anche degli altri obiettivi, fissati dalle Nazioni Unite nel 2000, è troppo lento e rischia di fallire. Il rapporto sottolinea come una posizione di particolare rilevanza assume il secondo degli obiettivi, che mira ad ottenere l’Educazione Primaria Universale: investire nell’istruzione, soprattutto nei paesi più deboli, equivale a dare un forte impulso al raggiungimento di tutti gli Mdg (Millemnium Development Goals – Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio).

Ranjan K Panda, an Orissa based researcher, writer and development practitioner writes about a Swastik school in Godbhanga village of Orissa, India. What’s so special in this rural school is that there aren’t any drop-outs and the school produces better students as compared to other schools in the vicinity.

Yes, was the overwhelming response at a recent panel discussion held at New Delhi by the National Conference of Dalit Organisations (NACDOR), a union of more than 300 grassroots Dalit organisations spread over India.

New Economics Foundation has published a report on the threats of climate change. Using case studies, it warns that global warming could prevent the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and calls for immediate factoring of these concerns into global development plans.
