ActionAid’s Hunger Monitoring project reveals that climate change and oppression in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have worsened hunger and deprivation amongst the population. The study points out significant changes in weather patterns over the last four to five years which has adversely affected farming.

The cotton has now been dubbed "the killer crop" as continues to take the lives of farmers in the Vidarbha region of western India. High cost of farming and poor returns have taken the lives of nearly 8,000 farmers in four years says activist farmer Kishor Tiwari.

The Green Revolution has been a useful response to food insecurity at a certain point in India's history. But the strategy cannot be a permanent one for a country like India. The fact is that intensive agriculture could happen only with high a level of irrigation, with diversity of ecology, rainfall and water table on which India is lacking.

Recently, United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP) launched this years human development report for Zambia in Lusaka. The occasion, which was graced by the presence of the country's vice president, Nevers Mumba was rather sobering. There was just nothing to celebrate. Zambia finds itself in the unenviable 164th position in the world on social and economic performance.

Lagi, petani organik menunjukkan kualitasnya. Hal itu ditujukan oleh komunitas petani organik di TNDS Kapuas Hulu Kalimantan Barat yang mendapatkan sertifikat sistem pangan organik untuk madu hutan oleh BioCert.

Tak ada yang menyangka jika di Jakarta masih ada seseorang yang menggantungkan hidupnya dari kegiatan bertani. Misan, warga kota Jakarta, sudah empat tahun berprofesi sebagai petani perkotaan. Berbagai kesulitan ia atasi berkat keteguhan dan keuletannya.

Akhir-akhir ini, kearifan lokal perlakuan petani terhadap benih pertanian semakin hilang. Hal itu terjadi seiring dengan tercabutnya penguasaan atas benih dari petani ke korporasi-korporasi besar di bidang pertanian. Kondisi itu dinilai akan semakin menjadikan petani kita kian terpuruk.
