17.05.2005 The recent announcement by the UN Commission on Human Rights to appoint two special rapporteurs to tackle the deep-rooted problem of caste-based discrimination is a shot in the arm for activists fighting for the rights of the Dalits, the oppressed classes, in India. The two rapporteurs, who have been given the title of Special Rapporteurs, will undertake a three-year study and will draft a set of principles and guidelines to eliminate this form of discrimination. Rahul Kumar speaks to Dalit organisations in New Delhi.

Burundi President Domitien Ndayizeye
16.05.2005 Although details have not been worked out, Burundi's president and last remaining rebel group, Forces Nationales de Libération (FNL), agreed Sunday to immediately end hostilities and work for sustainable peace in the country. If negotiations succeed, the FNL would join six other rebel movements in the country's transitional government formed to end the civil war between the Tutsi and Hutu, which began in 1993.

10.05.2005 The Canadian government's complicity in torture is under review at the UN. Specific concerns include: the failure of Canadian consular officials to recognize evidence of torture in the cases of Maher Arar and William Sampson; intelligence sharing with other countries which results in human rights abuses; the practice of returning people to countries where there is a substantial risk of torture; and, the excessive and inappropriate use of TASER guns.

Molte persone sono gią in fila da ieri sera per attendere le 14.30 di lunedģ 14 marzo, ora in cui gli uffici postali incominceranno ad accettare le domande. Si stanno organizzando con “liste spontanee” (non ufficiali) sotto cui la gente segna il proprio nome, per garantite ordine nell’accesso agli uffici postali. In coda anche molti trentini.

Human Rights in SCG 2004 Report
