No country in Europe could be prouder of its multicultural experiment than Britain. But because Blair refuses to accept that the war in Iraq could have played a part in breeding home-grown suicide bombers, multiculturalism has become a whipping boy, argues A. Sivanandan.

Should councils print all important documents in several languages, or is this encouraging separatism? Is it really offensive to call someone "coloured"? Should we put off that important meeting because it’s Yom Kippur, even though only one of the people attending is Jewish? The head of the Commission for Racial Equality makes another controversial speech.

After the criticism of his disastrous handling the Katrina disaster, President George Bush promises a reconstruction programme of $200bn for areas destroyed by the hurricane. But the first and biggest beneficiaries will be businesses that specialise in profiting from disaster, and have already had lucrative contracts in Iraq. They will gentrify New Orleans at the expense of its poor, black citizens, says Mike Davis.

Federal contractors involved in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts have been exempted from requirements that ensure employment opportunities for women and minorities. "The exemption could hurt the very people most affected by Hurricane Katrina, effectively shutting them out from the opportunity to participate in rebuilding their own neighborhoods," civil rights advocates said.

The July terror attacks exposed a racial "nightmare" where some districts are becoming "fully-fledged ghettos - literal black holes" where people fear to go, says Commission for Racial Equality chairman Trevor Phillips. He is right to draw attention to the problem, says Karen Chouhan, but public debate on 'integration' must involve, not blame, Black communities.
