The Osjek Greens association sent an open letter today, to all Members of the Sabor (Croatian Parliament), on the occasion of the start of Debate on problems in Pozega-Slavonija County. The open letter demands expansion of investigation and urgent legal measures to stop the work and close the “Velicanka 2” quarry, operated by Kamen-Ingrad company from Velika, currently involved in bankruptcy procedures.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sep 19 (OneWorld) - The White House and dissident Senate Republicans began a fresh round of talks Tuesday over how to treat and prosecute terrorism suspects. President George W. Bush is having difficulty gaining approval for his plan because it would legalize interrogation techniques many see as torture including mock-drowning, stripping, and hooding of detainees.

"Le armi e i salari dei talebani sono finanziati dall'oppio: è una guerra combattuta su due fronti". Lo ha detto stamattina a Bruxelles Antonio Maria Costa, direttore esecutivo dell'Ufficio delle Nazioni Unite contro la droga e il crimine (Unodc), presentando il Rapporto annuale sulla produzione di oppio nel paese asiatico. Costa ha chiesto con decisione ulteriori sforzi e risorse alla Nato per "azzerare l'industria dell'oppio nel sud dell'Afghanistan, distruggendo i laboratori di eroina, chiudendo i bazar per la vendita della droga, attaccando i convogli di oppio e perseguendo i grandi trafficanti". Secondo il Rapporto, la coltivazione di oppio ha visto quest'anno un incremento del 59% rispetto al 2005. Intanto il tribunale di Kabul ha assolto i due sospetti assassini di cinque operatori di Medici Senza Frontiere (Msf) uccisi nella primavera del 2004 mentre tornavano in automobile da una clinica rurale nel nord dell'Afghanistan. Msf denuncia le numerose anomalie nel corso del processo giudiziario.

Il Ministro dell'Interno, Giuliano Amato, ha annunciato l'istituzione di una commissione presieduta dal Capo della Criminalpol con l'incarico di verificare in tempi brevi le situazioni di illegalità connesse allo sfruttamento dei lavoratori extra comunitari. Il problema dello sfruttamento dei lavoratori è emerso nei giorni scorsi in tutta la sua gravità dopo le rivelazioni emerse dal reportage dell’Espresso sullo sfruttamento dei lavoratori impiegati in agricoltura. A seguito dell'inchiesta la Confederazione italiana agricoltori (Cia) ha chiesto nuove regole contro lo sfruttamento degli immigrati ed invitato il governo ad aprire subito un Tavolo di confronto sul problema dell'immigrazione illegale in agricoltura che, "proprio a causa di organizzazioni di criminali, è costretta a fronteggiare una vera emergenza che ormai si identifica nella "tratta" di esseri umani".

The Macedonian Student Union (MSU) accused the former government of abuse and foul-play in the distribution of accommodation in student dormitories in Skopje. According to MSU, the sad thing is that the problem of student accommodation is treated only as seasonal problem, while it has turned into a chronic problem long time ago.
