C’è aria di grande festa in Romania. Dopo cinque decenni di comunismo e diciassette anni di transizione, i romeni festeggeranno il Capodanno del 2007 come il Capodanno dell’integrazione nell’Unione Europea. Nelle grandi città del paese ma soprattutto nella capitale Bucarest le autorità hanno organizzato spettacoli e festeggiamenti speciali per un evento che è considerato il più importante dopo quello del 1 dicembre 1918 che marcò la costituzione dello stato unitario romeno. Il 31 dicembre simultaneamente in tutti i capoluoghi della Romania e nelle sedi delle istituzioni sarà alzata la bandiera dell’Unione Europea. In questo modo tutto il popolo saprà che la Romania è diventata membro a pieno diritto dell’Unione Europa. Nessuno può dire con certezza cosa rappresenterà il primo anno europeo. Nessuno sembra però pensare in questi giorni ai problemi che verranno.

In a press conference on Friday, Indian NGOs urged the government to do more to involve survivors of the 2004 tsunami in decisions related to rehabilitation to make the reconstruction effort a success. The NGOs had gathered under an ActionAid initiative to launch a report in Indian capital New Delhi.

Government Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday challenged the remark by UN Special Rapporteur on Child Soldiers Alan Rock that he would come up with evidence in two months to prove the Security Forces were conniving in child abductions, saying that the LTTE's self admission in the abduction of 24 OL students clearly showed who the perpetrators were.

Developing countries have successfully resisted pressures to “move first” to end the current stalemate in the Doha Development Round of WTO negotiations.
