27.04.2006 Ivory Coast has become the sixth African country to announce the outbreak of the dreaded bird flu. Viral strains taken from infected backyard chickens in the capital Abidjan have tested positive H5N1 avian influenza. Ivory Coast joins Egypt, where four people have been killed, Niger, Cameroon, Sudan and Nigeria. This comes as 19 African countries gathered in Malawi announced that the continent lacks funds, technical equipment and human resources to spot and tackle outbreaks of the disease.

24.04.2006 "Un bambino muore ogni 30 secondi di malaria mentre i farmaci efficaci non raggiungono i pazienti": è la denuncia di Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) in occasione del 25 aprile, Giornata africana contro la malaria. Per l'OMS la malaria è responsabile ogni anno della morte di un milione di persone, per la stragrande maggioranza si tratta di bambini dell'Africa subsahariana al di sotto dei 5 anni e di donne in gravidanza. Le terapie a base di combinazioni con artemisinina sono ritenute tra gli strumenti più innovativi ed efficaci per il trattamento della malattia. Tuttavia l'utilizzo di queste nuove terapie è limitato a causa dell'elevato numero di compresse necessarie e anche perché l'assunzione deve seguire un pasto grasso, spesso impossibile in gran parte dell'Africa. Intanto un nuovo farmaco per sconfiggere la malaria sta nascendo dalla collaborazione tra un azienda italiana e un'organizzazione non profit.

17.04.2006 Nine poultry farmers have committed suicide across India because of the bird flu scare. It is believed that nearly 70 per cent poultry farmers in India are in dire straits as demand for chicken and related products has gone down considerably.

14.04.2006 Un'epidemia di colera si estende rapidamente nella capitale dell’Angola, Luanda e in altre zone del paese riporta Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) che chiede urgentemente alle autorità angolane di dichiarare ufficialmente l’epidemia e prendere immediatamente tutte le misure necessarie per controllarla. Il numero totale di casi confermati di colera è fermo a 8.930, ma questa settimana il numero è arrivato a quasi 500 nuovi casi al giorno. "Siamo preoccupati per il fatto che l’epidemia sia ormai fuori controllo" - afferma Richard Veerman, capo missione per MSF in Angola. Intanto circa 700 persone sono morte a causa di meningite in Burkina Faso e in Niger dall'inizio dell'anno mentre sono 7mila i casi recensiti dalle Nazioni Unite. E dopo due anni di lavori sta per aprire i battenti il nuovo centro sanitario di Kovè (Togo), per le vaccinazioni contro il tetano, la meningite, la poliomielite ed il colera realizzato con donazioni private e con il contributo dell'agenzia Ansa.

13.04.2006 A new report from GRAIN looks at the power politics behind the bird flu, the global response to it and its consequences for the poor. The GRAIN report finds that the agencies of the UN at the forefront of the international response to the virus, both WHO and FAO, are pursuing top-down strategies for wiping out bird flu that in turn are wiping out the foundations for long term, pro-poor solutions in the process.

10.04.2006 India’s encounter with avian influenza seems far from over. Navapur in Maharashtra, where the avian influenza first broke out in January this year, had barely started breathing a sigh of relief at the containment of the deadly virus when a veterinary laboratory in Bhopal announced the presence of the pathogen in samples collected in Jalgoan district, 140 km away.

06.04.2006 Montreal 29 March: “No child born with a bleeding disorder should have to live with pain, disability, or the prospect of early death,” says Mark Skinner, president of the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH).

He was speaking in the lead-up to World Hemophilia Day, (April 17) which has adopted the message this year of Treatment for all!

“With treatment, a person with hemophilia can expect to live a long, healthy life with few restrictions, says Skinner. “Without treatment, our members face continual pain, disability, isolation, and premature death. Most people with hemophilia, who do not receive treatment, die before the age of 19.”

05.04.2006 The Indian government has formed the National Council on AIDS to mainstream HIV/AIDS into the ongoing activities and programmes of all government departments. It also plans to formulate new policies and strategies with ecological safeguards to take on dengue and malaria.
