The Millennium Development Goals in Eritrea
The continuing crisis of food security in Eritrea undermines conventional development planning. In turn, the unceasing conflict with neighboring Ethiopia, natural disasters, and HIV/AIDS ensure that food security will remain a major threat to vulnerable post-war Eritrea during 2005. The country, which has a long history of droughts, failed to obtain enough timely rains during 2004 and must seek assistance from the world community to provide food to half of its population. More than 2 million people are at risk and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has already warned the world community of a possible draught calamity. The joint appeal of $157.2 million by relief agencies operating in Eritrea has received a poorer response from donors than expected, posing a grave threat to food security of this young nation.
At present the Government of Eritrea is putting a lot of effort in the development of human resources in the sectors of health and education. Accordingly, at the beginning of the 2003/2004 academic year, the Ministry of Education set out on a five-year plan to bring a radical change covering all levels from elementary to secondary with a budget of USD 200 million
