Conflict in Eritrea
The Ethiopian-Eritrean border conflict remains the root cause of all the instability in the Horn of Africa. Although both sides moved a step forward with the peace agreement which ended the war in 2000, there remains much to bridge the gap and bring the two sides to a common developmental platform. The implementation of a boundary commission is one sincere option to protect millions in the border regions from poverty and death. The international community, especially United Nations and the United States, must activate their influence to avert a possible human catastrophe and bring a lasting peace, stability and prosperity to the region.
The withering relationship between Eritrean authorities and the UN peacekeepers in Eritrea and Ethiopia has been rejuvenated, through the reopening of an important roadlink. This, after the souring of ties in May, when the peacekeepers were accused of threatening national peace and stability.
