Registration of births and a crackdown on diagnostic centres have resulted in more girls being born than boys in the southern city of Hyderabad. Its success in reversing its decade-long sex-ratio is now being considered for replication in other states by the government.

An office in a Mumbai brothel is bringing out India's first newsmagazine for sex-workers. The Red Light Dispatch will help these women to voice their problems and dreams, and help connect them with the masses, says the magazine's editor Anurag Chaturvedi.

Amnesty International risponde al presidente della Cei, card. Angelo Bagnasco, che ieri nella sua prolusione al Consiglio Episcopale Permanente aveva fatto riferimento all'associazione parlando della "clamorosa inclusione" "tra i diritti umani riconosciuti, della scelta di aborto, magari anche solo nei casi di violenza compiuta sulla donna". Il presidente della Sezione italiana di Amnesty, Paolo Pobbiati, replica ricordando le "numerose precisazioni e smentite" all'affermazione che il cardinale attribuisce all'associazione. E ribadisce che Amnesty, dopo tre anni di missioni in paesi in cui la violenza sulle donne è tanto diffusa ed endemica quanto impunita, "ha voluto prendere le difese delle migliaia e migliaia di donne che ogni anno subiscono stupri, che vanno in carcere o rischiano la pena di morte per aver cercato di interrompere una gravidanza a seguito di violenza sessuale o perché essa mette a rischio la loro vita o quella del nascituro".

In a victory for those fighting for the rights of the girl-child, the Bombay High Court upholds an amendment to the law banning sex-determination tests. A Mumbai-based couple had mounted a legal challenge to the constitutional validity of the amendment that bans pre-conception gender selection.
