Euroopan unionissa jopa 75 prosenttia romusta joutuu hukkaan.

File photo of a sit-in outside Mehdiganj Coca-Cola Plant in India
22.02.2008 The Energy and Resources Institute in its recent report has criticised Coca-Cola in India. The findings say that the company is responsible for contributing to further depletion of community water resources in already water scarce regions. It says at least one of the bottling plants should be either closed or relocated.

21.02.2008 India generates around 300,000 tonnes of e-waste annually, which is likely to grow more than five fold by 2012. In a recent ranking guide, environmental body Greenpeace has called upon Indian electronics companies to adopt green practices to deal with the e-waste menace so as to come at par with global brands.

Jaladindi, meaning a religious procession across water
18.02.2008 In western India, jaladindi (a water procession) is undertaken by a local doctor every year to spread awareness on keeping rivers clean. It was felt that people would relate better if it was linked to the 800-year old spiritual tradition of a march for the realisation of life’s noble values.

Manual scavengers at work / Photo credit: Tehelka
18.02.2008 There are millions in India who do the dirty job risking their lives. We never notice their lives or deaths. Bereft of the honour of uniform and the posthumous glamour of martyrdom, these soldiers sacrifice their lives making sure the rivers of filth flow unhindered, says S. Anand of Tehelka, a weekly magazine.
