National news channel NDTV and Sanctuary Asia, an environmental magazine have launched an online campaign to protect Indias famous big five the rhino, bengal tiger, leopard, asiatic lion and the elephant. These animals are high on the demand lists of poachers and are slowly vanishing due to poor protection in the reserved forests and a lack of recruitment.

Indian NGO, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in collaboration with Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage (DRONAH) is organising a public meeting on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Gurgaon, near Delhi in India at 6:45 pm. The event will feature the release of CSE's publication, 'Sewage Canal: How to Clean the Yamuna' by Shri Bhure Lal, Chairman, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) followed by a screening of CSE's 32-minute film on the Yamuna.

The workshop aims to facilitate discussions and information exchange from the various stakeholders on e-waste management.

The Gowda community in the southern Indian state of Kerala was persuaded to voluntarily shift from the Tirunelli-Kudrakote, a human - elephant conflict-ridden area. In a significant move the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) with support from the UK-based World Land Trust and the IUCN Netherlands Committee have provided alternate houses, cultivativable land, drinking water, and other civic amenities to the people who opted to relocate.

Environment NGOs in India are protesting the decision of the Gujarat government to burn toxic chemicals lying for years in the Union Carbide plant in neighbouring state of Bhopal. Environmentalists fear the possibility of ecological hazards during transportation and disposal of the waste.

The recent United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, released worldwide, is the most detailed account of the effects of climate change driven by human activity. Chairman of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri says India is unprepared for the outcome that could lead to widespread floods, drought, water scarcity and mass migration, scoring a poor 5 on a scale of 10.
