L'Organizzazione mondiale della Sanitą (Oms) ha calcolato che linquinamento dellaria causa 530mila morti ogni anno in Asia: le metropoli del continente riportano tassi di inquinamento che superano di 5 volte Parigi, Londra e New York e di 5-6 volte il livello massimo consigliato dallOms. E quanto emerge dalla "Conferenza 2006 per la miglior qualitą dellaria" conclusasi a Yogyakarta in Indonesia la settimana scorsa. La cittą pił inquinata č Pechino con 142 microgrammi di particelle inquinanti per metro cubo daria, rispetto ai 22 di Parigi, i 24 di Londra e i 27 di New York. Proprio a causa di questi dati, il Comitato Olimpico Internazionale ha avvertito la capitale cinese che rischia di perdere i Giochi, se non fa qualcosa per migliorare la qualitą della sua aria. Un rapporto dellAsian Development Bank prevede perņ che in Asia lemissione dei gas serra triplicherą in 25 anni.

E' stato approvato nei giorni scorsi in via definitiva il nuovo Regolamento Europeo sulle sostanze chimiche (REACH), "ma sono troppe le scappatoie per l'industria" - denunciano numerose associazioni tra cui il WWF. Il Regolamento, destinato a sostituire la legislazione europea nata pił di 40 anni fa, avvia lEuropa verso un nuovo approccio alla regolamentazione delle sostanze chimiche. Ora si apre la fase dell'implementazione anche in Italia dove le associazioni evidenziano che permane una sottovalutazione, sia politica sia industriale, sull'importanza dei nuovi adempimenti previsti dal REACH. E annunciano che si batteranno per ottenere una piena attuazione della riforma, affinché il nostro Paese recuperi i ritardi accumulati.

Greenpeace č in azione da questa notte a Porto Tolle per dire No al carbone. Alcuni climber hanno scalato la ciminiera della centrale, dipingendo la scritta "No Carbone". Altri hanno posizionato sul tetto dell'edificio una mega coccarda con scritto "Enel clima killer". La centrale di Porto Tolle sorge all'interno di un parco naturale definito patrimonio dell'Umanitą" dall'Unesco e, secondo il progetto dell'Enel attualmente in fase di autorizzazione, dovrebbe essere convertita a carbone per una potenza di 1.980 Megawatt e con un'emissione di CO2 di oltre 10 milioni di tonnellate l'anno. Il carbone č il combustibile con le pił alte emissioni specifiche di CO2, oltre il doppio del gas naturale.

They presented the public with the experiences they acquired in Great Britain, on obligations and actions of the UK Military regarding sustainable development, environmental protection and public health.

Parvinder Singh, Senior Programme Officer in the Information and Communication unit of Toxics Link, offers an inside view of the reactions it evoked and argues that there is more to environmental films than the size of its audience.
