18.03.2008 With over 100,000 Oliver Ridley turtles dying over the last decade in Orissa in eastern India, Greenpeace has set a target limit of 20% on turtle mortalities for the state government. Despite adequate funds, the state has failed to prevent illegal trawling.

13.03.2008 Khonoma, a Naga village and a site for Tragopan sanctuary in north-east India, has set an example for eco-friendly tourism. If the Centre for Environmental Education’s awareness programme was a catalyst, the real thrust came from the village council, which played a crucial role in the nature conservation effort.

05.03.2008 The newly-opened Global Seed Vault (GSV) at Svalbard in Norway is being criticised by Indian and other NGOs for excluding farmers from its institutional framework. Farmers being the first link in the food chain, should be involved in conserving genetic biodiversity, they argue.

03.03.2008 It was due to the efforts of 79-year-old Achyutha Bhat, that a village in Karnataka in southern India could overcome water scarcity. His passion for digging surangas (man-made tunnels) has not only revived the traditional water harvesting system but also helped local farmers in the region.

03.03.2008 When local populace and officials work in tandem, the chances of any conservation efforts succeeding are more. This became clear when villagers in the hilly state of Uttarakhand in northern India and forest department came together to help protect wildlife in the famous Jim Corbett National Park.

03.03.2008 I missionari dell'Aefjn (Africa Europe faith and justice network), una rete di 43 congregazioni religiose maschili e femminili presenti in Europa e in Africa hanno chiesto all'Unione Europea e agli Stati membri una moratoria di 5 anni sull'importazione di agrocarburanti da monocolture su larga scala e da qualunque forma di sostegno a tali colture in Africa. I missionari propongono di distinguere tra "agrocarburanti" e "biocarburanti", i due nomi dati ai carburanti prodotti dalla trasformazione di materiale vegetale vivente. Aefjn è a favore e mantiene il nome "biocarburanti" solo per i prodotti veramente sostenibili dalla produzione al consumo senza generare effetti negativi sull'ambiente e sulla società. Nel numero di marzo il mensile Missione Oggi dedica all'argomento diversi articoli.
