The conference, Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Adriatic is organized by the Slovenian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Urban Planning, in cooperation with UNEP/MAP INFO/RAC.

Disappearing act
31.05.2006 India has finally imposed a ban on cattle drug diclofenac that had almost caused the extinction of vultures in the country in under two decades. While harmless to cattle, the drug causes fatal kidney and liver damage to vultures that feed on animal carcasses.

15.05.2006 The International Ranger Federation (IRF) and IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) have given a call for the YOUNG CONSERVATIONIST AWARD. The award aims to recognize and raise awareness of the outstanding contributions made to the management of protected areas, and leadership shown, by young conservationists. The deadline is June 02, 2006.

12.05.2006 Water scarcity is not something new. It haunts many places in Gujarat. But what is new is that inspite of water shortage there are many villages in Gujarat which have faced the drought successfully. These villages could save themselves from the drought because they welcomed the Roof Rain Water Harvesting Structure (RRWHS) introduced by the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), says Aditi Varma from Charkha.

11.05.2006 Jerdon’s Courser - which is a small nocturnal bird found in the Eastern Ghats of the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was thought to be extinct till it was re-discovered in 1986. But the Telugu-Ganga Canal Project, which runs through the Sri Lankamaleswara Wildlife Sanctuary (SLWLS), threatens to destroy the habitat of the bird.

It is clear that women as well as men suffer from the ill-effects of badly planned and implemented development projects. However, in a scenario where adequate attention is not paid to the question of rehabilitation itself, it is not surprising that women as well as other poor, vulnerable people stand to lose the most and benefit the least from so called ‘development’ projects. How can we use knowledge and information technologies to ensure that human lives are not sacrificed at the altar of development?

03.05.2006 Oltre 16.000 specie di animali e piante rischiano di scomparire, compreso un mammifero su quattro e una specie di uccelli su otto riferisce il rapporto della World Conservation Union (Iucn): il numero totale delle specie gią ufficialmente dichiarate estinte č 784, altre 65 si possono ormai solo trovare in cattivitą. Delle 40.177 specie valutate per la lista rossa della Iucn, 16119 figurano tra quelle minacciate da estinzione: tra queste l’orso bianco, l'ippopotamo e la gazzella del deserto. Tra le minacce compaiono i cambiamenti climatici, ma soprattutto la caccia e altri pericoli creati dall'uomo. E in tema di animali, LAV presenterą un esposto alla Procura delle Repubblica per l’ipotesi di reato di istigazione a delinquere nei confronti di una sezione siciliana del CNGEI (Corpo Nazionale Giovani Esploratori ed Esploratrici Italiani), nelle cui pagine internet dedicate alle tecniche di “sopravvivenza” vengono riportate istruzioni su come catturare e cuocere cani, tassi, volpi, puzzole, faine e ricci.
