Greenpeace criticized the decision of the India power ministry to not introduce a legislation to ban the light bulb in India by 2010. Reacting to the ministry's statement that a legislation to ban the light bulb in India is premature, Greenpeace pointed out the government of Ghana for taking key measures to implement a complete ban on the light bulb in the country.

According to the UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF), the rains and cyclone in Pakistan have displaced more than 377,000 people. Tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are now living in makeshift shelters, or in tents provided by the aid agencies.

Local water activists’ group Forum for Water and Sanitation (NFWS), Nepal, said the lack of laws enabling equal rights to water has long been a key problem and blamed the poor water management, political neglect and the current legal framework for water scarcity.

Tigers have become few and far between in India’s specially designated national parks and sanctuaries. A flourishing illegal trade in tiger parts mainly in China and East Asia has led to indiscriminate poaching in India’s protected tiger reserves.

Greenpeace activists demand a law to govern e-waste management in the country and presented a reportin the Ministry of Information Technology, India, on ‘Extended Producer Responsibility in a non-OECD context’ which can be used as a basis for legislation to tackle the growing problem of e-waste .

Bhutan, a country committed to environmental preservation is in dilemma as how to reconcile conservation, economic development in the era of rapid globalization. As per the law which says the country reserve 70 per cent of its land for 'green' cover, of which 60 per cent should be forests.

Nepal has developed simple and cheap technologies that make the best of local resources and don't damage the environment. The new technologies have been indigenously designed, based on traditional skills and knowledge, and are cheap and easy to use and maintain.

Greenpeace India has released the Indian Guide to Greener electronics which ranks major Indian computer manufacturers on their green performance. The ranking shows that most Indian companies are yet to be at par with global brands.

India plans to expand its oceanography research, tapping into the wealth of the little-explored Indian and Southern Oceans. Exploring these oceans could yield bounties in terms of information and resources. Both oceans play an important role in the formation of the Indian monsoon and could also harbour submerged deposits of copper, nickel, manganese and cobalt.

Il 20% della popolazione mondiale, concentrata in 30 Paesi, deve fronteggiare problemi di carenza di acqua: una percentuale che entro il 2025 diventerà del 30% in 50 Paesi. Sono le cifre più significative fornite dalla Nazioni Unite sul fronte dell'emergenza acqua che è al centro della "Settimana mondiale dell'acqua" (World Water Week) in corso a Stoccolma dal 12-18 agosto. Gli esperti informano che sono 2,6 miliardi le persone nel mondo a non avere accesso a servizi sanitari adeguati e a dover fare i conti con le malattie che ne derivano come la diarrea che uccide 2 milioni di bambini ogni anno. Tra le questioni sul tappeto quella dei biocarburanti: la prospettiva è infatti che l'acqua possa essere sempre più impiegata in futuro per produrre i cereali per le bioenergie, invece che a sfamare le popolazioni.

L'Unicef ha lanciato un allarme sul rischio di "un'incombente emergenza sanitaria per milioni di bambini" in Asia meridionale a causa delle piogge monsoniche che hanno lasciato milioni di persone isolate e in urgente bisogno di acqua, cibo e riparo. "Se gli aiuti non arriveranno nei prossimi giorni l'emergenza sanitaria potrebbe riguardare interi villaggi" - riporta l'Unicef. Anche la Caritas ha attivato le sue sedi locali, ma avverte che sono stati segnalati a Roma dei "falsi volontari" che chiedono offerte per le iniziative a favore delle popolazioni colpite. A oltre una settimana dalle peggiori alluvioni monsoniche che abbiano colpito l'Asia meridionale il Bangladesh, l'India e il Nepal sono ancora sconvolti dalle repentine inondazioni che hanno colpito circa 30 milioni di persone e il piano di distribuzione degli aiuti sta subendo forti rallentamenti per le pessime condizioni delle strade.
