Maailmanpankki voi tehostaa köyhyyden vähentämistä, arvioi pankin sisällä toimiva itsenäinen evaluointiryhmä. Vakaan talouskasvun tukeminen, realistiset tavoitteet ja maaseudun köyhyys vaativat huomiota. Ainoastaan 40 prosenttia Maailmanpankin luottoja saaneista valtioista on viimeksi kuluneen viiden vuoden aikana pystynyt lisäämään vuosi vuodelta henkeä kohti laskettua kansantuloaan.

In October 2006, eight years after India and Pakistan crossed the nuclear threshold, the world witnessed yet another breakout, when North Korea exploded an atomic bomb and demanded that it be recognised as a nuclear weapons-state. Talks aimed at persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons, in return for security guarantees and economic assistance, collapsed last week.

Aasian talouskasvu lisää moottoriliikennettä, mikä puolestaan nostaa kasvihuonepäästöjen määrää ja heikentää ilmanlaatua, todetaan Aasian kehityspankin tutkimuksissa. Tähän päivään asti polkupyörä on ollut Aasiassa huomattavasti yleisempi näky kuin auto. Talouskasvun myötä tilanne on nopeasti muuttumassa.

Government Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday challenged the remark by UN Special Rapporteur on Child Soldiers Alan Rock that he would come up with evidence in two months to prove the Security Forces were conniving in child abductions, saying that the LTTE's self admission in the abduction of 24 OL students clearly showed who the perpetrators were.

The new modernised and enlarged Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) was signed today at the South East European summit of Prime Ministers in Bucharest. Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Joachim Rucker, together with Kosovo Minister for Trade and Industry Bujar Dugolli and Deputy Head of UNMIK Pillar IV Andreas Wittkowsky, participated in the signing ceremony on behalf of Kosovo.

Developing countries have successfully resisted pressures to “move first” to end the current stalemate in the Doha Development Round of WTO negotiations. This is a sign of “growing maturity” and is of critical importance as this may well be the “last opportunity” to put the development dimension at the centre stage of WTO negotiations, opined Gopal K Pillai, Commerce Secretary, Government of India and the country’s chief negotiator at the WTO here today.

Kiinassa valmistellaan uutta työlainsäädäntöä. Huhtikuussa julkistettu lakiluonnos lisäisi työntekijöiden oikeuksia. Työsuojelu ja vähimmäispalkkojen toteutumisen valvonta tehostuisivat. Lisäksi työntekijöiden mahdollisuudet rajoittaa irtisanomisia paranisivat ja viikkotyöaikojen enimmäismääriä rajoitettaisiin.

A World Bank report - Global Economic Prospects 2007: Managing the Next Wave of Globalization - released on Friday in Indian capital New Delhi warns that globalization could spur faster growth in developing countries but could be accompanied by growing income inequality and potentially severe environmental pressures.
