Community leaders from Mehdiganj in north India began a hunger strike to demand the closure of the Coca-Cola bottling plant. The leaders have accused the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Mehdiganj of creating severe water shortages affecting over twenty villages, polluting agricultural land and groundwater, illegally occupying land, evading taxes and treating workers unfairly.

A new book has been recently launched that shows the way forward on

The book Charting a New Course: A Strategy for Sustainable Management of India's Water Resources in the 21st Century by GN Kathpalia and Rakesh Kapoor goes beyond the acerbic debate on water resources between the 'pro-environment' groups and NGOs on the one hand and the 'pro-development' engineers, contractors and government officials on the other. Priced at Rs 75, (US $7) the book is Crown size and 64 pages. “La desertificazione è una delle minacce più serie che l’umanità si trova ad affrontare. È un problema globale che affligge un quinto della popolazione mondiale in più di 100 paesi” - ha ricordato il Segretario generale dell'Onu Kofi Annan, nel suo messaggio diffuso in occasione della “Giornata mondiale per la lotta alla desertificazione e alla siccità”, che si è celebrata sabato 17 giugno. I deserti sono minacciati come mai prima, mentre potrebbero essere un tesoro di risorse per il pianeta per la produzione di energia solare o piante medicinali sottolinea un rapporto pubblicato dall’Onu nei giorni scorsi. Obiettivo dell’iniziativa, che coincide anche con il 10° anniversario della convenzione Onu per combattere la desertificazione, è anche quello di attirare l’attenzione sulla vita di milioni di persone - soprattutto nell'Africa subsahariana (dove il 66% del territorio è arido o semiarido) ma anche in Asia e in America Latina - che oggi vivono al limite della sussistenza.

Villagers in Mehdiganj, 20 km from Varanasi have been on an indefinite dharna outside and Coca Cola bottling plant since March 23, 2006 demanding the closure of the plant. The plant, in operation since 1999, has caused a fall in water table to the extent of 50 feet forcing farmers to deepen their tubewells. The farmers fear that if the plant continues to function it’ll soon create a situation where there may not be any water left. In addition the quality of water has also deteriorated. 'A come acqua: “L’acqua è un BENE COMUNE, la cui proprietà e gestione deve rimanere in mano pubblica”. Questo è quanto sta scritto nel programma di governo dell’Unione. E questo è uno di quei 3 o 4 impegni come il ritiro delle truppe dall’IRAK senza se e senza, la revisione della legge30…che il nuovo governo non può eludere. Uno di quelli che dà l’idea del cambiamento con il passato, un segnale forte per i fatidici primi 100 giorni. Invece il documento d’intenti del governo in circolazione, non ne fa menzione e il voto sulla direttiva Bolkestein con la quale in Europa si da il via libera al mercato dei servizi compreso quello dell’acqua, non è un bel segno e ci sia permessa la considerazione, sembrano accogliere più le pressanti richieste di Montezemolo e di Confindustria che quelle del Movimento sull’Acqua.
