02.09.2005 L'Alto Commissario ONU per i rifugiati António Guterres ha accolto con soddisfazione l'adesione dell'Afghanistan alla Convenzione del 1951 sullo status dei rifugiati e al relativo Protocollo del 1967. Secondo l'Alto Commissario, l'evento è tanto più significativo se si considera che l'Afghanistan da decenni è paese d'origine di una delle più numerose popolazioni di rifugiati e richiedenti asilo al mondo. "È possibile che talvolta ci si dimentichi del reale significato della Convenzione sui rifugiati, ma se qualcuno davvero può coglierne il senso, si tratta sicuramente delle popolazione afghana" ha dichiarato Guterres. "Durante i lunghi e oscuri anni di guerre e regimi estremisti - ha aggiunto l'Alto Commissario - milioni di afghani sono stati costretti ad abbandonare le proprie case per cercare rifugio altrove. Il fatto che ora il paese sia in grado di aderire alla Convenzione costituisce la testimonianza dei progressi compiuti sulla via della ripresa".
