27.12.2005 Although the massive volume of aid money helped overcome severe logistical problems immediately after the Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 280,000 people, it also contributed to a lack of coordination between smaller, less experienced agencies and the more seasoned charities, thus hampering the long-term recovery effort.

27.12.2005 It may require something close to divine intervention to tide over the post-tsunami habitat problems. Of the 100,000-odd families displaced by the tsunami in south India, over 92% still live in temporary shelters, makeshift tents and public buildings, in rented houses or with relatives. The recent rains have worsened the situation, virtually turning hundreds of tsunami-affected families into a floating population.

Pondicherry fishing village after the tsunami
21.12.2005 Mothers who had lost their families and their children to the tsunami, nearly one year back, are again giving birth and bringing up new families in coastal Tamil Nadu with help from the government and local doctors.

16.12.2005 A newly reconstructed sewage system in Smaq/c village was officially inaugurated and handed over to the municipality of Prizren and the community of Smaq/c village, following the completion of works partially funded from the Government Assistance to Returns (GAR) project. The GAR project is 100% financed by the Government of Kosovo.

Tsunami wreckage in Sri Lanka
08.12.2005 The Guardian newspaper highlights life in pictures from coastal Sri Lanka and India one year after the tsunami. The pictures were taken by photographer Tim Hetherington and will be displayed at an exhibition - Every Time I See the Sea: Life After the Tsunami - all over the UK begining December 9, 2005.
