A pochi giorni dalla Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sul Clima (UNFCCC), che si terrà nell'isola indonesiana di Bali dal 3 al 14 dicembre, gli attivisti di Greenpeace si sono arrampicati su una gru del cantiere di Torre Valdaliga Nord di Civitavecchia con un enorme e colorato striscione per denunciare la riconversione a carbone dell'impianto che allontana l'Italia dagli obiettivi di Kyoto. E un rapporto internazionale del WWF presentato ieri anche in Italia mette in evidenza l'impatto devastante del riscaldamento globale nei paesi dell'Asia-Pacifico e particolarmente in Indonesia, il quarto stato più popoloso del mondo. WWF Italia presenterà a Bali un pacchetto di proposte per un "accordo quadro globale vincolante giusto ed equo" e un obiettivo da raggiungere assolutamente nel 2009 e cioè prima della scadenza del Potocollo di Kyoto.

NEW YORK, Nov 26 (OneWorld) - The Bush administration is pushing for plans to reuse spent nuclear fuel in power reactors across the United States, but key senators and nuclear analysts have raised economic and security concerns about reusing the weapons-grade fuel.

The report, Up in Smoke, compiled by environmental groups, including Oxfam and Greenpeace, says rich countries must honour their commitments to renewable energy. India alone has the potential to provide 60% of its electricity using these sources by 2050. It also calls for rich countries to allow the transfer of green technologies to developing countries.

WASHINGTON, Nov 15 (OneWorld) - China is well on its way to acquiring fully 15 percent of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2020, while the United States is dragging its feet on transitioning away from fossil fuels, according to a pair of reports released here this week.

Kiinan tavoitteena on tuottaa 15 prosenttia energiastaan uusiutuvilla vuoteen 2020 mennessä. Kiina edistyy lupaavasti kohti tavoitettaan, kun taas Yhdysvallat on jäämässä jälkeen kansainvälisestä kehityksestä fossiilisista polttoaineista luopumisessa, raportit kertovat.

A coalition of businesses and non-profit groups has called on the U.S. Congress to support renewable energy tax incentives, higher vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and an increase in the share of U.S. energy supplied by renewable technologies.

India’s affluent, comprising 1% of its people, produces carbon emissions 4.5 times that of the poor and double the global average, reveals a new study by Greenpeace. The increased consumption of electronic devices, vehicles and air travel by the consumer classes are responsible for the great carbon divide.
