The civil society action against government acquisition of land in rural areas is gathering steam across India, people’s movements all over the country are mobilising support against land acquisitions .Indian states as Maharashtra, an anti-Special Economic Zones (SEZ) protest has been planned out, and a statewide protest against land grabs has kicked off in Rajasthan.

A research by the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS) – an advisory body to the Indian government and a watchdog for the informal sector – throws light on shocking levels of poverty amongst 836 million informal workers who eke out a living on a mere Rs 20 a day.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International will observe, 9 August 2007 as an International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and support their demands for the right to full implementation of The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. This act will allow the tribals to lead a life free from threat of evictions and displacement.

Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar after her release from a Madhya Pradesh jail has said that the adivasis have become the victims of a conspiracy and she has vowed to carry on with the agitation to demand a just rehabilitation for the tribals.

The tribals of an east India state, Orissa leave for London to protest at the annual general meeting of mining giant Vedanta about the environmental impact of its proposed aluminium mining and processing plant in the Niyamgiri Hills, which is full of bauxite and other minerals. The plant will severely affect the livelihood and way of life of the tribals.
