Suicides by farmers in the west Indian state of Maharashtra have been on the rise despite a relief package announced by the Indian Prime Minister. In northern Maharashtra the number of farmer suicides in 2006 has inched close to the cumulative figure for the past four years.

The situation in the Narmada valley today is nothing unexpected yet the most shocking. The Sardar Sarovar Dam, with the height raised, has silently killed the Adivasi communities in the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh and many in Badwani and Dhar districts of Madhya Pradesh too. These generations' old Adivasis in the Satpura and Vindhya have lost their main sources of livelihood, land, to the sea that the roaring river water is converted to.

A decir de las autoridades del RIC, la recopilación de información catastral esta avanzando. La Unidad de Planificación Geográfica y Gestión de Riesgo del Ministerio de Agricultura asegura que el trabajo de fotografía aérea, que servirá de base al RIC para la demarcación territorial, está concluido en 97%.

En aquellos años de mi niñez y adolescencia, escuchaba decir a mi padre y a mi abuelo que el campesino que se comía la semilla estaba perdido. La semilla, así considerada, era señal de continuidad de cada cosecha.

People from the states of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, UP, West Bengal, New Delhi and other parts of India joined farmers from the Narmada valley at Rajghat, near Badwani in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, to protest against the displacement and submergence of villages by the waters of the Narmada dam.
