24.12.2007 The trend towards the increased number of women and agricultural production appears to be linked with a variety of factors, such as male rural out migration, the growing number of women-headed households and the development labour-intensive cash crops, says Govind Kelkar of UNIFEM, South Asia, in her paper presented at a seminar on “Enhancement of Women Farmers’ Role in the Development of Rural Asia” organized by Food and Fertilizer Technology Center in Korea in October 2007.

07.12.2007 The ILO and the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation have come together to help develop new kinds of insurance for low-income people in impoverished countries across the world. Thirty-four million US dollars given by the Gates Foundation will create the Microinsurance Innovation Facility that will provide grants and technical assistance to organisations working with the poor.

Many among approximately 470 million disabled persons of employable age often face disproportionate levels of poverty and unemployment.

03.12.2007 To mark the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3, a two-day event, ‘Abilities Mela’, was held in Indian capital New Delhi to showcase the skills and talents of people suffering from variety of disabilities. Organised by National Trust and supported by major corporate groups, the event also had a job fair to provide them with opportunities for work.

Working with dignity
03.12.2007 On the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons, December 3, Juan Somavia, DG of the International Labour Office in a message emphasised on the need to provide employment to people with disabilities and allow them to live with dignity. Exclusion of the disabled results in a loss of some US $1.94 trillion to global GDP.
