The Jatropha scrub weed can weather droughts, stop soil erosion, transform barren lands into lush greenery, while providing self-sufficient energy for rural communities – all at the same time. While India has plans to make the plant its chief biofuel source, there is little knowledge on the environmental impact of its cultivation.

Il movimento di adolescenti lavoratori Nats nei giorni scorsi è stato ricevuto dal parlamento nazionale e dal governo Chavez. “Un passo decisivo per il riconoscimento dei diritti del minore lavoratore” – commenta Cristiano Morsolin che accompagna dal 2001 i movimenti NATs in America Latina e per Selvas.org ha redatto la cronaca dell’incontro. I Movimenti di bambini e adolescenti lavoratori, che hanno già compiuto 30 anni di storia in America Latina, hanno fatto sentire la loro voce per appoggiare la riforma costituzionale del Presidente Chavez e per rendere visibile una realtà che coinvolge ben 1.400.000 bambini e adolescenti in Venezuela. The Indian cottonseed industry is marked by the highest proportion of child labour in its workforce, primarily girls. This blatant modern form of child exploitation is linked to the larger operating market forces and masks the social and legal responsibilities of the state, says a recent report.

A Food for Work initiative by the World Food Programme (WFP) has helped rebuild more than 1,300 kms of rural roads and almost 9,000 kms of bridle paths in quake-affected North Pakistan. Rural roads and pathways connecting the mountainous terrain were destroyed by the 2005 earthquake, cutting people off from relief supplies and medical aid.

Una 'controfinanziaria' da 16,3 miliardi di euro che prevede l'armonizzazione delle rendite e minori uscite grazie alla riduzione dei costi della politica, alla chiusura dei Centri di permanenza temporanea, al riordino delle convenzioni sanitarie, alla soppressione del finanziamento di 30 milioni di euro per la preparazione del vertice del G8 del 2009 alla Maddalena, a riduzioni di stanziamenti previsti per alcune grandi opere come il Mose (170 milioni) e la Tav (185 milioni), all'eliminazione di 732 milioni euro per i contributi alle scuole private, e soprattutto, al taglio di 4 miliardi alla spesa militare e - in cambio - maggiori finanziamenti alla spesa sociale e contro la povertà. Sono i dati salienti della "Finanziaria per noi" presentata ieri alla sala stampa del Senato da Sbilanciamoci!, la campagna di 47 organizzazioni della società civile che da alcuni anni promuove una controfinanziaria per un’economia di giustizia e un nuovo modello di sviluppo fondato sui diritti, l’ambiente, la pace.

According to the magazine of the Finnish Electrical workers’ union, Estonian electricians working at the construction site of the new Hilton hotel close to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport were paid no more than five to six euros per hour. Similar offences have been claimed to have happened around Finland.

October 10 marks one year since the Child Labour Act banned children from working as domestic servants. Yet millions of children continue to work in domestic and hazardous occupations and are vulnerable to abuse. Save The Children has called for concerted campaigns to save these lost childhoods.
